We hear so much these days about “deconstructing” Christianity. During this Season of EASTER, while our focus is on resurrection, we are going to spend some time exploring the reconstruction of our faith.
Over the course of four faith CHATs we will explore new ways of practicing christianity in light of our evolving knowledge about the cosmos, what it means to be human, relating to the MYSTERY we call “God” and following Jesus’ way of being in the world.
Before each faith CHAT participants are encouraged to view selected videos which will function as conversation starters.
“The conventional God existed outside of space and time, a being beyond imagining, who lived in heaven, unaffected by the boundaries of human life. Thus, Western religion developed a language of what theologians call the omnis. God was omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient: all-powerful, in all places, and all knowing. But the grounded God is a God in relationship with space and time as the love that connects and creates all things, known in and with the world. The omnis fail to describe this. Instead, we might think of God as inter, the spiritual thread between space and time; intra within space and time; within space and time; and infra, that which holds space and time. This God is not above or beyond, but integral to the whole of creation, entwined and the sacred ecology of the universe.” (Diana Butler Bass, “Grounded: Finding God in the World A Spiritual Revolution”)
Two videos to inspire our Chat this week. The first video opens us to a wider perception of the MYSTERY with the question: What Is God? and the second video challenges us to think about relating to the MYSTERY with the question: Where Is God?

Join For the LOVE of CREATION or a contemplative gathering with music, prayer and meditation hosted by Anna-Bigland Pritchard and Sabrina Di Matteo. Nourish mind, body and soul for Earth Week and learn about a new contemplation resource from For the Love of Creation.
Anna Bigland-Pritchard is a vocal artist, pedagogue, arts administrator, and expressive arts therapy student living in the traditional territories of the Wh-Say-Nech (W̱SÁNEĆ) and Le-kwung-en-speaking peoples, under the Douglas Treaties (Victoria, BC). She describes herself as a liturgical neo-anabaptist, and most often finds God in the whispers of trees and the breath between notes. As a music director, Anna is passionate about empowering collaborative creation for both healing and positive social change. Anna believes in the sacredness of nurturing a deep love of self, of neighbour, and prioritizing connection with the rest of creation; This includes a commitment to non-violent peacebuilding, decolonization, anti-racism, intersectional feminism, and art-making for all.
Sabrina Di Matteo has been involved in the Catholic Church since her youth, and currently works with religious congregations at the Canadian Religious Conference in support of their mission and social and climate justice networks. She lives in the Tiohtiá:ke / Montreal area, home to many diverse Indigenous nations, settlers and newcomers. After her studies in theology, she worked in pastoral animation with young adults, with an approach centered on artistic expression including song and theater, and the importance of rituals. Sabrina is involved in interreligious dialogue groups and writes regularly for www.presence-info.ca
Online, EASTERN Time Zone
In advance of Earth Day, organic farmer, biblical scholar, teacher, and author Sylvia Keesmaat will discuss Recovering our Roots in the Community of Creation. Karri Munn-Venn of Citizens for Public Justice will respond, linking participants to events and actions from the For the Love of Creation faith-in-action campaign.
Join For the LOVE of CREATION on Earth Day to celebrate the 1st anniversary of For the Love of Creation and discern our gifts for climate action in community.
In preparation, please take a moment to reflect on your place in Creation. Step outside and take a photograph of your hands or feet on the Earth (toes in the mud, feet in a river, hands on a tree, arms around an animal) in a place where you feel connected with Creation.
Post your photo to social media with this caption: “The path to climate justice begins with the places we love. #ForTheLoveOfCreation #EarthDay2021”

We no longer share an understanding of what it means to be human with our ancestors. How do our evolving understandings about what it mean to be human impact the way we hear and make meaning out of our sacred stories?
Michael Morwood is a former priest whose evolving views of christianity have provided insights to those of us who long for a new way of being in the world which honours the wisdom of our ancestors even as we continue to explore the wonders of creation. The video below will help shape our faith CHAT. Enjoy the video and then join our CHAT by using the Zoom link listed below the video.

The stories gifted to us by our ancestors grew out of their limited understanding of the Cosmos. In our lifetimes, the scientific revelations about the nature of reality have been astounding. How do we relate to the vastness of the Cosmos? How does what we are learning about the Cosmos impact the way we imagine and relate to a CREATOR/MYSTERY/DIVINITY/SOURCE?
Brian Swimme is a mathematical cosmologist with an uncanny ability to articulate the new story of our origins in ways that, those of us unfamiliar with the breakthroughs in science can begin to understand. As science continues to revolutionize our understanding of who we are and where we are, the stories we tell to make meaning of life are also beginning to change. Below are the first three in a series of videos Swimme produced together with sermon “Ecology is the New Theology” by evolutionary theologian Michael Dowd. These videos will help shape our faith CHAT. Enjoy the videos and then join our CHAT by using the Zoom link listed below the videos.
